During the third lockdown of 2020, Gedling Legal’s Trainee Solicitor, Sara Fayaz undertook a virtual work experience package with Bevan Brittan via the East Midlands Development Network for EMLawshare.  Sara received access to training with fee earners at all levels, one to one mentoring sessions, the opportunity to undertake research tasks, being involved with casework discussions as well as access to virtual social events, in particular with other trainee solicitors.

Sara talks about her experience:

“I was paired with an Associate who took the time to understand the areas of law I currently work in, and those areas where I have an interest or where it might be helpful for me to have a point of contact at the firm to ask questions or develop my knowledge.

One to one sessions were organised on the subjects of State Aid and Subsidy Control; Local Authority Governance; Procurement; and Planning.

I found the meetings via zoom to be really useful, it was clear that all of those I spoke to had a wealth of knowledge and experience.  They were friendly and approachable and were more than happy to take the time to impart practical tips and advice that I was able to put into practice straight away.  I was also able to direct the conversations towards any areas where I had particular questions which I found invaluable.

I also take comfort in now having points of contact should I need any guidance or pointers in future.  Sometimes you just have that quick question and it’s nice to know I can just ping across an email or pick up the phone.

I was also given the opportunity to meet with a couple of trainee solicitors from Bevan Brittan and I think we all took a great deal from that conversation, comparing training in private practice with local government and sharing our experiences. As the only trainee in my authority it was good to meet and network with other trainees.

My “virtual” work experience is ongoing and I couldn’t recommend it enough to others looking to develop their knowledge, build contacts and gain some extra insights and support in areas of law that interest them“

Sara has since completed her training contract, qualified as a Solicitor and starts a full time permanent post with Gedling Borough Council in July 2021.
